CENTRAL U.S - A trough pushing in from the west will be responsible for a few strong to possibly severe storms on Thursday across the high Plains to the north-central U.S. The SPC has issued a Slight (level 2 out of 5) risk for severe storms from Colorado through Minnesota.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-11 052417-1757589869638.png">The timing of these storms will likely start during the daytime hours and build as temperatures rise into the afternoon.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/2025-09-11 05-25-45-1757589991523.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Some of these temperatures will be really heating up into the 90s! A strong upper-level trough along with monsoonal moisture advecting northward will hone in on southwestern Colorado and northwestern New Mexico over the coming days. Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

CALIFORNIA - Wildfires in the western U.S. continue to burn, impacting air quality across much of the country. The Garnet Fire, which began in the Sierra National Forest on August 24, 2025, has prompted a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.fs.usda.gov/r05/sierra/alerts/garnet-fire-closure-order">partial forest closure </a>near the fire.According to the Fresno County Sheriff's Department, some evacuation orders are in effect in the area. The fire has now burned over 56,000+ acres and is approximately 15% contained as of Wednesday evening.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/web6-1757599366147.png"><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/2025-09-11 09-48-00-1757598502790.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>As of Thursday morning, the air quality is in the moderate range from the Garnet Fire. September 10th marked the climatological peak of Atlantic Hurricane Season, so where is the activity? This was only the 9th time since 1950 when there were no active storms. That is 75 years! Several factors contribute to this season being extremely quiet. For one, it has been scorched, and there is wind shear, and less storm development off the coast of Africa.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-11 051458-1757589317734.png">As for now, the Atlantic Basin remains quiet for the short term. However, NHC says a tropical wave is expected to come off the coast of Africa in the next few days, and there is a chance for some development in the next seven days. If this does not verify, this would be only the 2nd time (1992) since record keeping in 1950 with no Atlantic named storm activity between Aug 29 and Sept. 16. Meanwhile, in the next few days, a massive plume of Saharan dust is expected to move into the Atlantic, reducing chances for thunderstorms to organize.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/2025-09-11 05-15-38-1757589379543.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The Climate Prediction Center shows several regions in the next few weeks with low to medium confidence of development in the middle of the month, favoring some waves exiting off the coast of Africa. Given how this season has played out so far with those waves, we'll wait and see!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-09 150718-1757452042492.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/web3-1757597487809.png">Do not let your guard down. September is historically the peak of hurricane season, and ocean conditions remain favorable for additional development. Whether or not this particular system develops into a named storm, it serves as a reminder that the Atlantic remains active and that the window for tropical threats is far from closed.
